Alexandrite is an exceptionally rare, color-changing variety of mineral chrysoberyl, famous for appearing emerald-green in daylight and ruby-red in incandescent light. Discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1830 and named after Czar Alexander II, it is a durable gemstone (8.5 on the Mohs scale) often associated with luck and June birthdays
